Malachi had been Independence Township assessor and died as an elderly resident of the Washington County Home.

He had 19 children by three partners, two of whom he married. (His second wife also had children by two other partners, one of whom was her husband before Malachi but one of whom was a paramour parallel to Malachi's during their marriage.) Malachi's wife's child by her paramour was raised in Malachi's home but his own two children by his paramour were not. This makes references to "brothers and sisters" in this extended family a bit confusing.

Malachi's Ohio death certificate is Vol. 4102, # 15161. The tombstone he shares with his second wife, Harriet, and son by Harriet, William, is adjacent to the column for his first wife, Lucinda. All are by the rear corner of the church.

A short announcement of his death appeared in the Sept. 24, 1923 Marietta Times.

Malachi might have had a lisp: In two separate records, his first wife Lucinda was referred to as Luthinda, and an oral history tape by his great-granddaughter Edith Taylor Lockhart recalled that his daughter Sena was called "Thena."

Two children by his first wife and one by his second died in infancy.

A "grandson," Charlie Mosser, son of Malachi's wife Harriet's daughter Ada, by her partner, lived with Malachi and Harriet for two census periods.
