CHANNELVIEW -- Luther Noah McDowell, 67, of Channelview, and formerly of Cuero, died Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000.

He was born May 1, 1933, in Groesbeck, to the late John David and Beulah L. Harris McDowell Jr. He was retired from the Cuero Police Dept., having served there from 1979 to 1984. He formerly worked at the Baytown Police Dept., the Harris County Sheriff's Dept., the Montgomery County Sheriff's Dept. and the Harris County Constable Dept. He received the Hundreds Club of Houston Award for Patrolman of the Year in 1973, was Master Mason for Cuero Masonic Lodge No. 409 AF&AM and was a member of Eastern Star No. 618.

Survivors: daughters, Connie Swearingen of Huntsville, Karen Walker of Channelview and Loren Cortney of Bastrop; sister, Nita Vowels of Baytown; brother, David McDowell of Houston; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: wife, Sylvia Carol ''Jean'' McDowell; son, Jeffrey L. McDowell; parents.

Visitation will be 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at Freund Funeral Home chapel.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home chapel, the Rev. Glenn Robertson officiating.

Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery in Cuero. Freund Funeral Home, Cuero, (361) 275-2343.
