William B. Field

HARTWICK SEMINARY - After a long illness, William (Bill) Byron Field went home to be with his Lord on March 27, 1998.

He was born on Nov. 7, 1915 on Staten Island to William DeLos and Jessica (Thompson) Field.

The family moved upstate in the 1920s, settling first in Hartwick and later in Hartwick Seminary where they operated Field's General Store.

He attended Cooperstown High School and was very active in Boy Scouts, attaining Eagle Scout with Silver Palm status. He was assistant scout master and later trained scout leaders. The highlight of his scouting career was attending the First National Boy Scout Jamboree in Washington, D.C.

Bill served in the U.S. Army Field Artillery, receiving an honorable discharge in 1943.

He married Dorothy Louise Rosenthal on Feb. 3, 1945 in Hartwick Seminary.

Bill was employed by the original Danny's Market for many years, except for a few years when he and his brother operated a traveling Country Store.

Ill health forced him to retire in 1971. To keep busy, his avocation became his vocation when he and his wife opened a book store. It's been said that every book he sold was like parting with an old friend.

He loved to travel and the family covered many, many miles camping and seeing the country by air and train covering about 85 percent of Amtrak trackage. He especially loved visiting family as they spread out over the country; when he was able, he walked five miles or more and was a familiar figure along the roads.

For over 40 years, he was a member of the Milford Center Community Bible Church, serving as Sunday School superintendent, trustee, deacon, moderator of the church board and as deacon emeritus.

A member of the Hinman Hollow Grange for many years, he served as master during the 1950s.

He loved his God, he loved his family, he loved his country and he loved his many friends.

Bill is survived by his wife, Dotty of 53 years; two daughters and two sons and their families, Heidi and Darrell Risley of Yakima, Wash. and children Christopher William and Jennifer Risley, Becky Wadsworth and daughter Rebecca of Tuckerton, N.J., William and Lauri Field of Lafayette, Ind. and children Libby, Evan, Hannah and Will, Daniel and Barbara Field and children Andrew, Amber, LaRae, Aaron, Timothy, Angel, Aimee and Rose of Mount Vision. Also his brother and sister-in-law, George and Florence Field; sister-in-law and husband, Betty and Frank Vernini; four cousins, Agnes Butler, Mildred Carley and Beryl LosCalzo and Fred Field; 21 nieces and nephews; and three special friends, Harriet and Lyle Smith and Naomi Markle.

He was predeceased by his parents and youngest brother, Robert, and his sister-in-law, Ruth.

The family will be at home in Hartwick Seminary Sunday, March 29 from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. for those who wish to call.

There will be a celebration of life for Bill on Monday afternoon, March 30 at 3 p.m. at the Milford Center Community Bible Church with Steve Fournier officiating.

For those wishing to do so, contributions may be made to the Milford Center Community Bible Church, the Hartwick No. 2 Emergency Squad and The Meadows Activity Fund.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.[The Daily Star, Page 10, Oneonta, Otsego, New york, March 28, 1998.]
