Private Harvey James enlisted 29 December 1863 in G Company, 24th New York Infantry, at Age 36.
According to US Army records, he died 4 July 1864 of Typhoid Fever at Finley General Hospital, which was on the Kendall Green (where Gallaudet University is now) in the Trinidad neighborhood of Washington, D.C. His death record was signed by the Medical Director of the Army of the Potomac, Surgeon G. L. Pancoast.
Notice of his death was published in the Oswego Commercial Advertiser Evening Edition on Saturday, 16 July 1864.
The stone erected in Sandy Creek was likely erected by Malcolm Elmer Rima, the husband of Harvey and Emily's daughter Martha, when the young Martha died in 1910. It is believed that when Martha died in 1910 - eight years prior to her mother - that the stone was originally erected. When Emily James died in 1918, it is likely that whoever interred her added the name of Harvey James, her husband, who had died nearly 50 years previously, as it was practically unfeasible to inter her at Arlington alongside her long-passed husband.
This stone in Oswego County does not mark the final resting place of Harvey James. Harvey is interred in Arlington National Cemetery, Section 13, Lot 6089. Harvey's actual resting place is located here:

Should Read Harvey James. He died in the civil war. His daughter Martha Arissy James married Malcolm LeRoy Rima and probably a family member placed this stone many years later. Harvey James 1827-1864
