His Sallie died of pneumonia leaving him with 3 small children under 10. He traveled to California, leaving his children with their uncles in Ripley and returned about 1888. He returned to the West for a period of time before returning and living with his son Ralph and Wife Arte and his two grandchildren Lyle Hazel and Juanita in Cooperstown Tsp when he died. His beloved wife Sallie was buried in the Mt. Sterling City Cemetery by her parents and although there is no headstone for John C. he is buried beside her.
