Karren, Thomas, a member of the Mormon Battalion, Company E, was born May 1, 1810, on the Isle of Man, a son of Thomas Karren and Catherine Clark. He moved to Liverpool in 1830, and joined the Church in May, 1842. He was ordained an Elder in Liverpool, emigrated to Nauvoo, Illinois, in 1844, was ordained a Seventy by Jacob Gates in 1844, and became a member of 20th Quorum of Seventy at Nauvoo. He joined the Mormon Battalion in 1846, spent the winter of 1846-1847 at Pueblo, and arrived in Great Salt Lake Valley July 29, 1847, soon after the original Pioneers came. He went back to Council Bluffs and returned with his family in 1850 to the "Valley." In 1852 he was called on a mission to the Sandwich Islands, where he was associated with Geo. Q. Cannon and others. He returned to Lehi in 1855, and later was chosen as first counselor to Bishop David Evans, which position he held until his death which occurred April 12, 1876. Bro. Karren was a faithful Latter-day Saint and was esteemed by all who knew him.
