Dr. Herbert married twice:
1. Frances Sarah (Fanny) Russell in 1894.
They had a daughter Edith Caroline Aitkens (m. Tuberg)
and Herbert's three step sons, who thereafter were surnamed Aitkens: Harold Howard Woolley, Francis Ambrose Woolley Aitkens, and Leonard Russell Woolley Aitkens.
Fanny died in 1908.
