John Ossian Porter married Emily Wilkinson. About 1847 John Ossian and his family moved to Mercer County, PA where he farmed. Two years later he moved to Crawford County, PA where he kept a hotel. On year later he moved to Winneshiek County, Iowa. He was the first to build in the area. He erected a frame building, 18 x 20 in size. It became a tavern and a stagecoach stop. John Ossian laid out the original town site of Ossian, named after him. He became the first postmaster. In the early days of the town a dance was held every week at the house of John Ossian Porter.
