John Ossian Porter married Emily Wilkinson. About 1847 John Ossian and his family moved to Mercer County, PA where he farmed. Two years later he moved to Crawford County, PA where he kept a hotel. On year later he moved to Winneshiek County, Iowa. He was the first to build in the area. He erected a frame building, 18 x 20 in size. It became a tavern and a stagecoach stop. John Ossian laid out the original town site of Ossian, named after him. He became the first postmaster. In the early days of the town a dance was held every week at the house of John Ossian Porter. John Ossian and Emily Porter had five children: Inez (b. abt 1843, d. unknown); C. Harry (7 Sep 1844, d. 1938); Sally (b. 1847, d. 1942, m. Rufus S. Benson; Orville "Obe" (b. 25 Mar 1849, d. 19 Nov 1936; Fingal (b. abt 1857, d. unknown).

Emily (Wilkinson) Porter died in 1862. John Ossian Porter probably remarried. Wife unknown except that she might have been born in MI. They had a daughter Zerviah (b. 1866, d. 1947, m. George Warren Allen). Zerviah Porter was adopted by her cousin, Lucy Porter Clark (1880 census).
