Born ca. 1839, he was a son of Barnabas J. Dooley and Melissa J. Adams. He lived with his father and father's wife, Priscilla (Banks) Dooley. After his birth, his mother married Robert Asbury Madden on November 9, 1839.
He married Mary H. Glover on April 4, 1861 in Hart County, Georgia. Their known children were: Joseph Jack, Beulah B., Leonidas, William Thomas, Edward T., Berdette, John Moody, Sheppard and Claude W. Dooley.
He was Town Marshall of Hartwell, Georgia and was shot and killed while on duty. A man was arrested and tried for the murder but was found "not guilty." The murder remains unsolved. An account of the shooting appears in the February 10, 1883 issue of The Hartwell Sun newspaper.
His name is engraved on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D. C. for officers killed in the line of duty.
