pub in the Fairmont, WV, West Virginian on Sat Jan 15, 1916 - WILLIAM ARNETT SUCCUMBS TO GRIP - William Arnett, a well known resident of Arnettsville, died early this morning at his home there after a brief illness. Mr Arnett had been ill of grip for a week, but had apparently recovered and was about his home as usual. During the night he became suddenly worse and his death occurred shortly after, his relatives residing here not having been informed of his condition until his death occurred. Messages received here by telephone at 2am announced the news of his death to members of his family and other relatives. Mr. Arnett was a son of the late Thomas Arnett, a pioneer settler of Arnettsville and the eldest son of 12 children, several of whom survive in the vicinity where his death occurred and at the time of his death he resided in the old home place. He is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Mary Thorne, and several sons and daughters, namely : Lon D. Arnett, librarian of the WV Univ library at Morgantown, Mrs N.S. Cox of Shinnston, Mrs James Hall of Fairmont, Miss Osha Arnett, a trained nurse at home, Ed Arnett at home, Wayne & French Arnett, both of Montana. Wayne is home on a visit and was with his father when the end came. Besides his immediate family, several brothers and sisters survive, namely : T. Wellington Arnett of Maple ave in Fairmont, Sylvester Arnett of Arnettsville, Mrs Kirk Page of Rivesville, Mrs Sarah Bonnifield and Mrs Jennie Hayward, both of Laurel Point in Monongalia County. Mrs Bonnifield and Mrs Hayward were both in Arnettsville, having been called to the home of Sylvester Arnett by the serious illness of Mrs Arnett. Mrs S.E. Upton and Mr Jonathan(sic) Arnett, both deceased, were sister and brother of the deceased. Mrs T.V. Buckley and Mrs Minnie Martin are nieces of Mr. Arnett. He has followed the pursuit of farming his entre life and regarded as one of the most successful men in that section. Until news can be received from his son in the west, funeral arrangements will not be completed.
