The son of George & Louisa P. (Johnson) Cole, in 1850, he lived with his family in New Garden, Chester County, Pennsylvania, and, in 1860, was a farmer living with and/or working for the John Chambers family in London Grove, Chester County. He stood 5' 10" tall and had brown hair and blue eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chester County August 9, 1862, overstating his age by two years, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 12 as a private with Co. H, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was wounded in the head at the battle of Antietam September 17, 1862 and in the toe the battle of Fredericksburg December 13, 1862. He was hospitalized in Washington December 14, and five days later transferred to David's Island U.S. Hospital in New York City. On March 2, 1863, he transferred to the convalescent camp at Fort Hamilton but returned to the regiment in time to receive an honorable discharge with his company on May 21, 1863.
He also was drafted and mustered in West Chester July 25, 1863, as a private with Co. B, 90th Pennsylvania Infantry, and suffered a grape or canister wound to the outside of the left calf at the battle of the Wilderness May 5, 1864. On November 25, 1864, he transferred to Co. B, 11th Pennsylvania Infantry, and discharged by surgeon's certificate May 15, 1865
He married Elizabeth Wilkinson March 14, 1867, in Brandywine Hundred, Delaware, and fathered Carrie (b. 04/29/68 - married Charles Talley) and James Franklin (b. 04/01/73). Elizabeth died June 25, 1897. He married Mary Shakespear Harris, twenty-three years his junior (and her first marriage), on June 30, 1904, in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware, where they lived until his death from "valvular insufficiency if heart." Humphrey and Mary had no children.
