WALSTONBURG — Paul A. Galloway, 94, died Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. from the Church Street Chapel of Farmville Funeral Home by the Rev. Doug Skinner and the Rev. Walt Tyndall. Committal service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Walstonburg Cemetery.

Mr. Galloway was a retired farmer who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a World War II veteran, where he served as the radio operator and gunner aboard the B17 the "All American." During its final mission, the B17 survived a mid-air collision. Mr. Galloway received the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight.

He is survived by a daughter, Wanda G. Taylor and husband, Dwight, of Wilson; son Jimmy Galloway and wife, Michelle, of Kenly; granddaughter, Carrie Galloway of Greenville; grandson, Matthew Galloway of Walstonburg; daughter-in-law, Sandra Galloway of Walstonburg; sisters, Axie Eason of Wilson and Agnes Horton of Snow Hill; sisters-in-law, Delma Galloway and Shirley Galloway, both of Wilson.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening immediately following the service.

T SGT, US ARMY. Paul was the radio operator onboard the B-17 "All American" (414th Squadron, 97th Bomb Group). A mid-air collision on February 1, 1943, between a B-17 and a German fighter over the Tunis dock area, became the subject of one of the most famous photographs of World War II. An enemy fighter attacking a 97th Bomb Group formation went out of control, probably with a wounded pilot then continued its crashing descent into the rear of the fuselage of a Fortress named All American.
