John Otto Carter, 81, of Spotsylvania County, formerly of Bowling Green, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2012, at his residence. Mr. Carter had retired from Rappahannock Electric Cooperative. He was a member of Massaponax Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was a NASCAR fan. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Evelyn Carter; his daughter, Denise Buckner, and her husband, Arthur; his stepson, Charles Payne, and his wife, Linda; his brothers Julian "Big Boy" Carter and Edwin "Putt" Carter; his sisters, Elizabeth "Becky" Porterwig and Clara Louise Briggs; his step grandchildren, Neil Payne, Deanna Buckner, and Tracey Workman; four great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Sallie Carter; and his brothers Robert, Herbert "Jim" Jr., and William "Buck" Carter. A service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Neil Payne, Johnny McAllister, Lyn Carter, Herbert Carter III, Richard Carter and Chucky Chewning. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Massaponax Baptist Church, 5101 Massaponax Church Road, Fredericksburg, Va. 22407 or Hospice of Virginia, 1700 Bayberry Court, Richmond, Va. 23226.
