Veteran Who Never Surrendered, Dead
Joseph Rogers Boldridge, a lifelong resident of Marion county, a veteran of the Civil war who served in the Confederate army valiantly and faithfully, and whose proud boast was that he never surrendered, died at his home in Nelsonville last Saturday night at 10 o'clock. He was ninety-one years of age.
For many years Mr. Boldridge was a farmer and general merchant and took an active interest in the affairs of his county. He was a partisan Democrat and took much interest in politics. When the Civil War broke out Mr. Boldridge was prompt to enlist in the service of the Confederacy. He participated in several important battles and had a number of narrow escapes. At the end of the war he returned to Marion county but as he never took the oath of allegiance he always jocularly claimed that he was still a rebel.
He had been a subscriber and reader of the Spectator for seventy years and until his advancing years kept him more closely at home was a frequqent caller at this office. He was an entertaining talker and was thoroughly conversant with the early history of the county.
He was married June 10, 1877 to Miss Sarah Portor Marksbury, who preceded him in death several years ago. He is survived by two children, Elmer Boldridge of Nelsonville and Mrs. Lenora Hutcherson, of Emerson; four grandchildren, Mrs. Lillian Kerrick, J. R. Hutcherson, Lloyd H., and Olan Lee Hutcherson, all of Nelsonville. He was a great uncle of Deputy County Colector, Jas. H. Phillips of Palmyra.
Funeral services were held at the Emerson Christian church Saturday morning and the remains interred in the Emerson cemetery.
