Gheorghe Paulencu was born in the village of Voloca, Bukowina, Austria-Hungary on April 14th, 1881.

In the fall of 1898, an agent from the Canadian Land Office visited Voloca with an offer of 160 Free acres of farm land to anyone willing to emigrate and help settle the prairies of Western Canada. So in April, 1899, Gheorghe, along with his mother and siblings, decided to emigrate with five other related families. This included the families of Nicolai Penteleiciuc, Nicolas Ropchan, Mihai Bordian, Procop & Paraschiva Axenty, and Marku Zilinski. They took a train from Czernowitz to Hamburg, Germanay and, on April 26, 1899, set sail aboard the S.S. Brasailia, landing in Halifax, Nova Scotia on May 9th.
