George A.C. Barnett was an Officer in the United States Volunteers during the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865.
He was born on December 22nd, 1839, in Rahway, New Jersey, and was married to Miss Emma Crawford Olssen (1849-193).
With the start of the American Civil War in April of 1861 he enrolled on April 23rd, 1861, at New York City, New York, for two years service, at the age of 21, and was mustered into service as First (1st) Lieutenant of Company B of the 9th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Hawkins Zouaves, on May 4th, 1861, at New York City, New York. He served with the regiment during its service in Virginia and on the coast of North Carolina, being appointed as the Regimental Adjutant on June 18th, 1862, however he resigned his commission on September 24th, 1862, and returned to New York. On May 29th, 1863, he once again enrolled for service at Albany, New York, for three years service, and was mustered into service as First (1st) Lieutenant & Regimental Adjutant of the 9th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on May 30th, 1863; however when the regiment was consolidated with several others he was transferred with the men as First (1st) Lieutenant to Company G of the 17th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on October 17th, 1863, later being transferred to Company B on November 1st, 1863, and was appointed as the Regimental Adjutant on March 30th, 1865. He served with the regiment in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, during which time he was also the Acting Assistant Adjutant General of the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, 14th Army Corps, from April to June of 1865. He was mustered out of service with the regiment on July 13th, 1865, at Alexandria, Virginia.
Following the war he studied law and was admitted to the New York State Bar on April 20th, 1866, going into practice with Rush C. Hawkins and John B. Pannes, two comrades from the Hawkins Zouaves, in Manhattan, New York, from 1867 to 1874. From 1875 to 1878 he was employed as a publisher in New York, but resumed the practice of law in 1879, continuing until 1891. Lieutenant Barnett died on August 3rd, 1914, and was buried at the Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.
