Nicolai Penteleiciuc was born in the village of Voloca, Bukowina, Austria-Hungary in April, 1867 and was married to Marina Paulencu there in 1891.

In the fall of 1898, an agent from the Canadian Land Office visited Voloca with an offer of 160 Free acres of farm land to anyone willing to emigrate and help settle the prairies of Western Canada. So in April, 1899, Nicolai, along with his wife, three children; Angelina, Calena and Elie, decided to emigrate with five other families, all related to his wife. This included the families of Nicolas Ropchan, Mihai Bordian, Procop & Paraschiva Axenty, Marku Zilinski, and his brothers-in-law, John & Gheorghe Paulencu. They took a train from Czernowitz to Hamburg, Germanay and, on April 26, 1899, set sail aboard the S.S. Brasailia, landing in Halifax, Nova Scotia on May 9th.

After spending several weeks being processed by Immigration, the six families then boarded a train arriving in Saltcoats, SK on July 21st, 1899. This is where Nicolai and Marina would have their fourth child, Maria, born on August 9th, 1899.
