U.S. Senator. He attended Pembroke Academy, New Hampshire, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1828 and practiced law in Guildhall, Vermont, (1828 to 1835). Returning to New Hampshire, in 1836, he continued the practice of law until 1846. Entering politics, he was solicitor of Coos County, (1838 to 1847) and a member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives, (1839 to 1841). In addition, he was Attorney General of New Hampshire, in 1847 and member-president of the New Hampshire State Senate, (1851 to 1852). On January 16, 1855, he was appointed as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Moses Norris, serving until March 3, 1855. After his short term, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
