The son of Edwin and Helen (Boutelle) Noyes. He was their only child to survive to adulthood. Boutelle entered Annapolis Naval Academy in September of 1865 and graduated with honors in 1868. Served on the Guerrier, flag-ship of the South Atlantic Squadron, 1868 - 1869. Promoted to Ensign in 1869. He was in the European fleet from 1869-1872, promoted to Master in 1870 and commissioned Lieutenant in 1873, the rank he held at the time of his death. From 1873-77 he was with the South Pacific fleet, serving on the training ship "Minnesota" from 1877-1880. In 1881, he was ordered to the Asiatic Squadron on board the "USS Richmond" where he was killed in an accident aboard ship on August 29, 1883. His body was returned to the United States and he was buried in the family lot with his parents and three infant brothers. He married Charlotte Bleecker Luce of Rhode Island on June 25, 1879. They had two sons Robert Boutelle Noyes and Stephen Henley Noyes.
