Born to William T. B. and Eleanor Bonniwell, Henry was one of 8 children - with siblings Charles, William T., James, George, Eleanor, Walter, and Alfred.

At 12, Henry pursued a medical career under a Dr. and arrived in Canada and served there through 1833. Two of his brothers arrived in the States in 1831 in Ulster County, NY and his mother joined the brothers after Henry's father died of cholera in 1832 in Canada. Henry joined the three in 1833 and a short time later left for Poughkeepsie, NY to learn ship building until 1839.

In 1839, Henry moved on to Mequon, Ozaukee county, WI along with his family - brothers George, William T, and mother Eleanor - where all purchased 1,300 acres and began farming.

In 1839, Henry married Catherine Reeves of Halifax, Nova Scotia on Sept 17, 1839 in New York, NY. Miss Reeves arrived in America at the age of 7 with her parents. The couple had 8 children Frazer (enlist in the Union army and not heard from since 1864), Elizabeth, Clara M, Edward G, Philip, Cordelia, Henrietta, and Sanders.

After pursuing gold during the gold rush of California,
Henry came to McLeod county for the first time in early 1866 and purchased land in section 36 of Acoma township. He returned to Wisconsin and brought his family back to Hutchinson the same year, built a home and settled into farming.

In 1872, Mr Bonniwell married a second time to Miss Eliza J Atchison of IL on November 27, 1879.

Once Acoma was organized as a town, Mr. Bonniwell served as town clerk, justice of the peace, and has been the secretary of the Acoma and Lynn Fire Insurance Association, probate judge, and school matters.
