(History of Nelson NH)
----------------------------------------------------------
Darius Farwell was the eighth child of twelve born to Samuel Farwell and Eunice Stoddard. He was born in Packersfield, NH, but in 1814 the name of the town was changed to Nelson.

On 3 November 1836, he married Mary Bryant, daughter of Benjamin Bryant and Sally Barret, in Nelson. Together they had eight children:
Sarah Jane, “Jennie” (8 Jan 1839 - 2 Jul 1932)
Corbin Curtis (18 Feb 1841 - 23 Jul 1926)
Cortis Stoddard (27 Feb 1843 - 25 Sep 1845), His birth record lists his dob as 27 Feb 1844, not 1843 as on the family monument.
Calvin Waldo (29 Aug 1845 - 16 Mar 1928)
Amanda Elizabeth (16 Mar 1849 - 1941)
Electa Maria (16 May 1852 - 8 Mar 1921)
Mary Ada (21 Oct 1854 - 9 Aug 1890)
Fred Charles (18 Dec 1856 - 13 Nov 1961)

Darius and Mary settled in the family farm, called Pleasant Hill Farm. He taught Sunday School and had a strong love of family. In 1889 he published a genealogy of his grandfather’s descendants. He also started the tradition of the annual gathering of the Farwell family.

Darius was also active in his community. In 1870, when the New Hampshire Legislature decided to create the town of Harrisville out of portions of the towns of Dublin and Nelson, Darius was one of three men, authorized by the Legislature, to call the first meeting of the proposed town.
“On the 13th day of August, 1870, agreeably to the above call, was holden the first town-meeting ever held in Harrisville. It was a bright, sunny day of the latter part of the
summer, when nearly every voter in this new town assembled to take part in this, their first town-meeting. Samuel D. Bemis was chosen moderator; Stephen L. Randall, clerk; and Darius Farwell, Samuel D. Bemis and George Wood were chosen selectmen; and Hon. Milan Harris was chosen agent of the town to act with the selectmen in the settlement of affairs with the towns of Dublin and Nelson.” (Hurd, Duane Hamilton. History of Cheshire and Sullivan Counties, New Hampshire. Philadelphia: J.W. Lewis & Co., 1886, p 210.)

He was re-elected selectman in 1871. In 1873, he was again re-elected and also chosen as moderator.
