Drew enlisted in the United States Army at Camp Forrest, Tennessee on 8 October 1942. After basic training, he was assigned to the 455th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion (Mobile), 8th Division.
Drew had been reassigned to Company E, 2nd Battalion, 137th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division. On 27 February 1945, while engaging the enemy he was Killed in Action at Gerederath, Germany. Drew was 24 years old and was awarded the Purple Heart. He participated in four Unit Campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and the Ardennes-Alsace.
Drew is interred at the Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands.
Drew was the son of William James Scalf and Vesta Mae Aston. He was married to Delta Ruth Jones.
