Two months after the birth of her 11th and 12th children, twin boys, Guy and Grant, "Fannie" died of an outbreak of measles in the area. For a few years, James Shackelford struggled to keep the family together with the help of his mother-in-law, Matilda Chambers Wood. He sought a new mother to care for his children, but his marriage to Molly nee Richardson (Bale Robertson) did not prove to be the solution. Many of the children had been farmed out - the very youngest, Grant, a sickly baby - to his step-daughter Emma Francis Robertson.

Some of the children were adopted and the names changed. Many of them followed the eldest daughter Lena to California.
