A head-on collision on California City Boulevard near Gantt Street took the lives of three individuals on Thursday, April 5, 2012 at 8:23 p.m. Two California City residents, Felicita Salvatierra, 67, and Samuel Salvatierra, 68, and Lynwood resident, Maria Ayala, 69, were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

The accident, which occurred five miles east of Highway 14, closed the boulevard for several miles while authorities took photographs and gathered data from the wreckage.

The fatal crash also critically injured five others. Two of the injured included children, one of whom was flown to Children's Hospital in Los Angeles and the other to Kern County Medical Center.

The other victims were transported by ambulance to local hospitals where they were treated for major injuries or underwent surgery.

According to police, the accident was caused when an eastbound Saturn sedan, carrying five passengers, drifted over the center line of California City Boulevard, the main thoroughfare through the city.

The Saturn side-swiped a Chrysler sedan headed in the opposite direction which carried two occupants. The Saturn then crashed into a Honda Accord which was carrying three passengers and following behind the Chrysler.

Samuel and Felicita Salvatierra were riding in the 1996 Saturn and Maria Ayala was a passenger in the 1995 Honda Accord.

California City Police Chief, Eric Hurtado, confirmed that crashes have happened near the same location on a long stretch of the two-lane portion of the highway where drivers, who may have been speeding, falling asleep, or over-correcting for vehicle drift, have been involved in several fatal accidents.

The police investigation is continuing and is expected to be completed by Monday, April 16, 2012.
