John's original name was Johanne Johannesson and he was born on the Manum farm in Inderøy, Nord-Trøndelag, Norway. He Americanized his surname to Manum when he came to America. John's first marriage was to Berthe Jensine Andersdatter Holte. They had at least 10 children before her death. In 1906 he married Carrie Simenson Haug, and they had at 3 children together.
