The Corning Daily Observer (Corning, California) 20 Mar 1950, Monday Page 1 (continued; shortened for brevity): … attempts to rescue, flames too intense, thought to be visiting with son, remains found at the rear of the house, under debris … William J. Montgomery, his only son, arrived from Sacramento at 8:30 o'clock following the fire.
Montgomery was born in Poseyville, Indiana, March 21, 1861, and had also farmed in Walla Walla, Washington, a number of years before coming to Corning. He had lived alone for a number of years, his son said, indicating his father had wished it that way.
Services for the fire victim will be held on what would have been his 89th birthday – Tuesday, March 21 – in Yost's Corning Mortuary chapel at 2:30 p.m.
