James David Carr was born in Arkansas to Stephen and Martha Jane Williams Carr in 1854. Due to Stephen's early death, he never could have known his father. The widow and her children survived chaotic times in Missouri during the Civil War, moving back to Arkansas by 1863. James moved with his mother and four adult siblings in a wagon train to Erath County, Texas in 1875. Married Margaret E. "Maggie" McNeil, daughter of prominent doctor and Erath land owner, W.W. McNeil in 1885. James and Maggie owned several farms in Erath and eventually moved to Thurber, Texas by 1920 where he and several sons worked in and around the coal mines.
