He graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1931, from Davidson College in 1935 and from Union Theological Seminary & Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Virginia in 1938. He also earned a master's in theology in 1950 and a doctorate in theology in 1955 from Union Theological Seminary. Both King College and Davidson College conferred on him the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity. He was ordained to the ministry of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) by Wilmington Presbytery in 1938 and his first pastorate was in Duplin County, N.C., where he served three churches, Chinquapin, Beulaville and Bethel.
From 1941 to 1946, he was a chaplain in the Army, serving during World War II in the European Theatre of Operations with the 113th Mechanized Cavalry Group. During this service, he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Legion of Merit. Upon retirement from the Army Reserve in 1974, with the rank of colonel, he was awarded an oak leaf cluster to the Legion of Merit.
After the war, Dr. Rose became the pastor of Central Presbyterian Church in Bristol, Va., where he served from 1946 to 1955. In 1955, he became pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, N.C. In 1956, he became professor of Pastoral Leadership and Homiletics at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia, where he served for 17 years. In 1973, he became pastor of the Chapel on the Boardwalk of Wrightsville Beach, N.C., and Pastor to Pastors in Wilmington Presbytery. He was retired by Wilmington Presbytery in 1978.
From 1996 until his death, Dr. Rose lived at Westminster Canterbury Richmond and conducted chapel services there on a regular basis.
For 17 years, he served as stated supply at Hebron Presbyterian Church in Manakin-Sabot, Va.
Dr. Rose authored the book "Confirming Your Call" (John Knox Press, 1967) and for 20 years wrote the "Questions" column in the monthly denominational magazine "The Presbyterian Survey." His publications also included numerous books of devotions and sermons, as well as volumes on family genealogy.
