Mrs. Bobbye Akin Savage, 89, retired teacher and longtime resident of West Sixth Street died Friday, March 22, 2002, at Life Care Center.

Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with the Rev. Frank Smith and the Rev. Tom Smith officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church.

A native of Waxahachie, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Henderson Akin and Catherine Thompson Akin. She was married to John Benton Savage who died Dec. 23, 1981.

Mrs. Savage was a graduate of Hampshire High School and Middle Tennessee State University. Prior to her retirement in 1974, she had taught 26 years at Hampshire School and Riverside Elementary School.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church; DAR, Thomas McKissick Chapter; United Daughters of Confederacy; AYTA; Annie White Kings' Daughters Circle; and the Maury Regional Hospital Auxiliary.

Survivors include one son, John Benton Savage of Asheville, N.C.; one sister, Mrs. Cleo Abernathy of Columbia; five grandchildren, John Benton Savage III of Corpus Christi, Texas, Benton Savage of New York City, N.Y.; Emily Savage of San Diego, Calif.; and Isaac Savage and Carmen Savage, both of Asheville, N.C.; and one great grandchild, Lauren Savage of Corpus Christi, Texas.

She was preceded in death by one son, James Robert Savage, who died in 1990.

Pallbearers will be grandchildren and Ed Thomas, Montee Sneed, Jimmie Patton, Dan Shannon, Roy Shannon, Walker Prince and Dr. Garry Love.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Ayres-Whitney Sunday School Class of First United Methodist Church and members of DAR, Thomas McKissick Chapter.
