Gillette was born in Holland, Michigan, the son of Verdine and Minnie (Braun). He married Mary Zech on May 6, 1929, in Grand Rapids, and they made their home in Decatur since 1930. He was a farmer, and enjoyed hunting. He is survived by his wife; four daughters, Irene (William) Garrod, Donna (Frank) Henley, and Carolynn Victoria "Vicki" (Herb) Smith; one son, Jerry; three grandchildren; his father; his twin sister, Gilletta (William) Lawrence; a half-sister, Majorie Gillette; a brother, Earl Gillette; and half-brother, Paul Gillette. He was preceded in death by his mother, and infant son, Gene.
