Eddyville Paper May 29, 1914

James Penick, for years a resident of Eddyville and who was engaged in the general mercantile business in Eddyville during the early days, later operating a hotel here, passed away at his home in Des Moines last Friday, May 22nd, 11:04, at the age of eighty-two years.

James Penick was born in Ohio March 23rd, 1832, and came to Eddyville when a young man, where he was engaged in business for a number of years.

He was married September 18th, 1862, to Francis E. gish, who with six children, four girls and one boy, survive: Mrs. O.C. Palmer of Albia; Mrs. M.L. Bassinger, Mrs. G.C. Anderson and Miss Neva Penick: J.G. Penick and Mrs. Ida Fry of Eddyville. He moved from Oskaloosa to Des Moines five years ago, where he remained until his death.

The remains were brought to Eddyville on the afternoon passenger train on the Rock Island Saturday and short funeral services were conducted at the grave by Elder W.C. Ross of the Christian Church. Interment in Highland Cemetery. Mr. Penick's aged companion is also confined to her bed by sickness.

It has not been many years since Mr. Penick and his family left Eddyville and there are many friends here-abouts who regret to hear of his death.

Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Palmer Were
called to Des Moines Friday by the
death of Mrs. Palmer's father, James
Penick. Mr.Penick was eighty-two
years of age and had been ill for
about a week. His life had been an
exemplary one and the many years
which he had lived bore evidence of
activity in all the good things in life
and friendship extending in many
different communities. Many friends
in Albia and Monroe county will sorrrow
with Mrs. Palmer in the death of
a beloved father. Funeral services
were held the latter part of the week
and interment was made in the cemetery
at Eddyville.
