The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Technical Sergeant Pete Leroy Hogan (ASN: 34548173), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Platoon Leader with Company F, 2d Battalion, 289th Infantry Regiment, 75th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 5 January 1945, during the "Battle of the Bulge" in Belgium. Assuming command of his platoon when its leader became a casualty, Technical Sergeant Hogan moved his men into position, encountering heavy enemy resistance, especially from the right and left flanks where machine guns threatened the leading elements of his platoon. Fearlessly dashing forward alone with hand grenades and exposing himself to intense enemy fire, Technical Sergeant Hogan succeeded in eliminating the machine gun positions holding the advance of the 1st Platoon on his left. Fatally wounded by enemy fire, he turned upon the machine gun positions firing upon his own platoon and with his remaining grenades dazed German machine gunners and continued to give orders to overrun the position. The indomitable fighting spirit and aggressive courage of Technical Sergeant Hogan are in accordance with the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 75th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
