Mrs. Aline Brainerd Emens, 94, died Wednesday, September 6, 2000, at Westminster Village Health Care Center, Muncie, IN. Her husband, former Ball State University President, John R. Emens, died in 1976. Mrs. Emens was born in Vassar, Mich., and graduated from Vassar High School before earning degrees at Eastern Michigan University and Michigan State University. She received a master's degree in library science from Ball State in 1965. She taught history and English at schools in Michigan before coming to Muncie with her husband and sons in 1945. Emens Auditorium, the college-community auditorium that bears the name of the former president, includes a mezzanine level lounge named in honor of Mrs. Emens. She was the national chairman for the Ball State University Annual Fund Drive in 1982, the year she received the Benny Award for outstanding service to the university. In 1990, she received the Ball State President's Medal of Distinction in honor of her contributions to the university and the Muncie community and in 1993, she was co-chairman of the Wings National Campaign for Ball State University and was a member of the National Development Council.

Mrs. Emens held memberships or board positions with First Presbyterian Church, Psi Iota Xi and its Bargain Box, Muncie Art League, Conversation Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, Ball Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Women's League of the Muncie Symphony Orchestra, Muncie Civic Theatre, Delaware County Tuberculosis Association and the Red Cross. Survivors include a son, J. Richard Emens (wife: Beatrice Emens-Wolper); a sister, Mary Esther Boyle; a daughter-in-law, Carol Emens; nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren Mrs. Emens also was preceded in death by a son, David, and two sisters.

Private services for Aline Brainerd Emens, first lady of Ball State University from 1945 to 1968, will be at Meeks Mortuary. Calling will be 3-6 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.
