Fred is the son of Benjamin D "Berry" Merricks and Luella Evelyn Cook. He was raised by his maternal grandparents, Elijah Cook and Susan Snell.

He married Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" Frazier on December 25, 1903 at Covington, Kentucky. They are the parents of 8 children: Thelma, Lawrence, Alva, John, Betty, James, Annie and Nellie.
