Avid Outdoorsman
ATHOL - Thaddeus W. Austin, 90, of Athol, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, in the LaChance Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, Gardner.
He was born in Brooks, Maine on May 14, 1912, the son of William and Cassandra (Badashall) Austin and attended schools in Brooks, Maine.
He was a graduate of the engineering program at the University of Maine at Orono. He was employed at the L.S. Starrett Company for 40 years, retiring as the foreman of the micrometer room in 1975.
Apart from his carpentry and gardening skills, including managing a 250 tree apple orchard, he will be best remembered as a avid outdoorsman in pursuit of the elusive salmon, trout, pheasant and deer. His outdoor pursuits were enjoyed both in the Athol area but also at his summer cottage in Millinocket, Maine where he spent much of his time after retirement.
His wife of 64 years, Delva E. (Loon) Austin, died on Jan. 2, 1999. He leaves a son, Robert W. Austin of Acton; two daughters, Joyce E. LaFontaine of Gardner, Sandy E. Austin of Middleton; a sister, Beatrice Hanson of Brooks, Maine; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be private.
