Couple Found Slain in Buckeye Home
A Buckeye Township couple were found shot to death when a neighbor went to check their home on South River Rd. Sunday evening. The victims were identified as Patrick Wright, 34, and his wife, Linda, 27. They were pronounced dead at the scene around 5 a.m. Monday by Dr. James Sullivan, county medical examiner.
The neighbor contacted Gladwin State Police about 9:30 p.m. Sunday after he went to the home at 1242 S. River Rd. and discovered the bodies. Preliminary investigation indicates robbery could be a motive of the double slaying, officers said.
Mrs. Wright's two sons were at the Tim Poole residence in Beaverton over the weekend visiting their father. One of the children contacted the neighbor by telephone Sunday evening after unsuccessful attempts were made to reach their parents, according to Doug Jacobson, county prosecutor. The children were to be picked up by one of the Wright's sometime Sunday.
"It appears some property is missing from the house," Jacobson said Monday afternoon. "But We're not sure just what was taken." The prosecutor said the murders occurred "roughly between 7 p.m. Saturday night and 2 a.m. Sunday." He noted it could change, however, pending the results of autopsies which were performed Monday. Beaverton City Police assisted troopers at the scene along with a detective, deputies and a tracking dog from the Gladwin County Sheriffs Department, who are helping in the investigation.
The State Police Crime team from Bridgeport was called in immediately, according to Jacobson. They were at the scene from late Sunday evening to 10 a.m. Monday morning. Law enforcement authorities say the investigation is continuing. Pathologists from Gaylord performed the autopsies Monday. Results were not available before press time.
Jacobson said evidence from the investigation by the crime lab team could take six weeks before it's processed and completed. "Right now, we don't have any suspects or concrete motives, other than robbery," he said. Jacobson added the two were found in "the living room area of the house."
Assisting in the investigation is Detective Sgt. Harold Janiszewski of the State Police Post in West Branch. As of late Monday, one of the investigators in the case said "there is little evidence to go on." Pat Wright was employed as a meat cutter at Ashcraft's Food Center in Gladwin and Linda was a clerical secretary in 80th District Court. According to close friends, they were last seen alive Saturday afternoon. This is the first multiple homicide in the county since June 14,1959, when a father in a fit of anger shot his three young children. The last fatal shooting was on February 12, 1978, when Harold Tidd was shot by his step-son. The Wright's obituaries appear on Page 2.
Linda S. Wright, 27, of 1242 S: River Rd., Beaverton, died suddenly Sunday, Jan. 17, at her home. Born in Gladwin on February 3, 1954, she had spent her lifetime in Gladwin County. Mrs. Wright was employed as a clerk in 80th District Court. The former Linda White, she was married to Patrick Wright on November 9, 1977, in Gladwin.
Surviving are 2 sons, Timothy and David Poole; her parents, Mr. arid Mrs. Herman (Bud) White of Beaverton; 2 brothers, Larry of Gladwin and David of Puerto Rico; one sister, Mrs. Barbara Millick of Apoka, Fla.; and her grandmother Mrs. Mildred Smith of Edenville.
