KILLED BY A TRAIN.
Zillman Hunt of Missouri Valley Run Down on a Small Bridge.

Train No. 5, on the Northwestern, ran down and killed a man yesterday, about a mile east of Missouri Valley.

The victim of the accident is said to have been Zillman Hunt, a wood sawyer of Missouri Valley. Hunt was walking on the track and was on a small slough bridge when struck. The bridge was only about eight feet high and the slough is dry, but instead of jumping, he attempted to clear the train by leaning outwards. The pilot struck him in the forehead and he was almost instantly killed.

He was picked up and brought into Missouri Valley where an inquest was held in the forenoon. It is said Hunt was deaf and probably did not hear the train or know of its presence until he felt the tremble of the bridge.

Zillman Hunt Instantly Killed Near Missouri Valley

Zillman Hunt, a wood sawyer, was killed yesterday morning by train No. 5 on the Northwestern about a mile east of Missouri Valley. He was walking along the track but being deaf, did not detect the approach of the train.

At the time of the accident, he had arrived at a small bridge crossing a slough. When in the center of the bridge, which was a small one , only eight feet high, he saw the train near at hand. Instead of jumping, he tried to escape by leaning outward, but the pilot of the engine struck him in the forehead and he was almost instantly killed. He was picked up and taken to Missouri Valley where an inquest was held yesterday afternoon.

NOTE: All newspaper articles show his first name as 'William'. I have changed it to 'Zillman' to match the name on his headstone.
