MacDONALD, Barbara Mary - 85, Needham, Mass., died September 4, 1998, in My Cape Breton Home, Howie Centre. Born in Oban, Richmond Co., she was a daughter of the late Hughie A. and Catherine (MacIntosh) MacDonald. She was employed for 25 years with New England Telephone Company and also a personal caregiver. She was also employed as a welder for the shipyards in Boston during the Second World War. She was a member of the American Pioneer Telephone Operator Retirees. Despite her illness, Barb and her sister boarded a plane in Boston a week ago and flew to Cape Breton, the place she left 68 years ago but always considered home, to spend her final days. Surviving are sister, Margaret (Peggy) Diggdon, Arichat; brother, John, Westmount; six nieces; two nephews. She was predeceased by brother, Donald Alex (Dan Alex); a nephew. Visitation 7-9 p.m. today, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Sunday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral 2 p.m. Monday in Black River United Church, Rev. Keith Adams officiating. Burial in Black River Cemetery. Donations to Black River United Church, Canadian Cancer Society or any charity.
