Backus of Upper Dimmock Hollow, who was in usual health when retiring Tuesday night, passed away peacefully in her sleep early Wednesday morning at her home on East Main street, as the result of coronary embolism. In the summer of 1888, she married Allen S. Backus, a well known farmer of Upper Dimmock Hollow, now deceased. To them was born one son, Arthur Backus, who died in infancy. Mrs. Backus was the granddaughter of Daniel Barrett, one of the first settlers in Lower Dimmock Hollow, and also a granddaughter of George I. Colvin, an early settler and prominent citizen of Morris ... Immediate surviving relatives are: two stepsons, Attorney Chester T. Backus of Morris, and Porter R. Backus of Hartwick Seminary; a niece, Mrs. Harold Johnson; a nephew, Arthur Colvin; and a grandnephew, Harland Johnson of Morris, to all of whom sincere sympathy will be extended ... interment in the family plot in the old part of the Hillington cemetery."
