My great grandfather first married Elsie Isabella French on 9 Feb. 1867 in Rock Island. He later married Rachel C. (Kate) Mace Feb. 12, 1874. They had one daughter, Aletha, in 1876. On 28 March 1886 he married Bertha Larsen. They had a son Ellsworth (b. 1888) and another son, Frank. On 17 Jan. 1895, he married Eliza J. Baker, his last wife. They had no children.

He was a Civil War veteran. He enlisted December 1st 1863 in York township, Carrol county, IL. and was discharged in Louisville KY. on July 12th 1865 at the end of the war. He was living at the Iowa Veteran's Home, Marshalltown, Iowa, when he died. He died a pauper and his son Frank handled his affairs.
