From Porter Loring Mortuaries:
Betsy Kobell (Elizabeth Catherine), who passed away peacefully July 5, 2012 at age 85, made the sharpest of tacks look like dull little pennies. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, dear friend and a strong, intelligent woman.

Born in New York, New York on January 20th, to Thomas and Nellie Burke, Betsy boldly overcame any hardship or hurdles by using her quick wit and sharp mind. She was raised on the values of a hard-working Irish family. As a young teen, she applied herself to her job as a runner on Wall Street in order to support her family.

She met Joseph Kobell in 1947, and enjoyed a wonderful marriage of 63 years while raising six children of independent spirit and having a major influence on her 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Betsy knew everything and missed nothing.

To her children, she had "eyes in the back of her head." To her grandchildren, she had "Grandma's little birdie that watched over them." Betsy also had a look that could straighten up the most mischievous of children, yet her heart and spirit embraced the love and loyalty of all who knew her. She could skin and slice an apple quicker than you could blink an eye, and made keeping the cleanest of houses look easy. Her many sayings could get our eyes rolling: "To make a long story short," "Before I get started," "Golly gumdrops," -- and the family favorite, "Jesus, Mary and Joseph, what am I going to do with you?"

Betsy welcomed all with open arms. Her sense of humor, compassion and loyalty brought many friends to her door. With her intelligence, love of country and no-nonsense manner, she could have been the best President ever. Bill O'Reilly has lost a passionate supporter.

Betsy is survived by her husband Joseph; her children Buddy, Joey, Patti, Elizabeth, Mary and John; her sister Eileen; cousins Margaret Burke and Eileen Faught; and, of course, her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. We will always love and miss you dear Betsy, and will be waiting for your "One last thing before I let you go..."

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, July 9, 2012, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
