Josiah Damuth/Demuth was born March 7, 1834, in Thurmont, Frederick County, Maryland, the son of David Damuth and Catherine Stauffer. He married on December 20, 1859, Mary Ann Freeze, daughter of Michael and Susanna Wetzel Freeze. The family left Thurmont, Maryland, in the mid-1870s, first settling in Monroeville, Huron County, Ohio, and then ultimately in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio. Josiah passed away on December 13, 1916, in Toledo, and was buried on the 15th in Woodlawn Cemetery there.

"Josiah De Muth, 82, died Wednesday in the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Exman, 1320 Bell Avenue. Mr. Demuth was born in Frederick County, Maryland. He is survived by his wife and six children. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 at 1320 Bell Avenue. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery."
