Henry Hurst was the second youngest of 11 children of Armstead and Matilda (Faris) Hurst of Bloomington Township, Buchanan County, Missouri; he was born on the old Hurst farmstead Sep. 27, 1958 and spent his childhood years in the farm community halfway between Rushville and DeKalb, Missouri, along "the Old North Road." He attended the Sleepy Hollow School which was 2 1/2 miles south of the farm.

Henry married Anna Belle Davidson on June 26, 1889. In about the same timeframe, Henry and Anna moved northwest to Tarkio, Missouri where - with his brother James Madison Hurst - he owned and operated the Hurst Mercantile for many years. The Hursts had a fine home in Tarkio and were members of the Tarkio Christian Church.

Henry and Anna parented four children: Vida Faris, born in August 1890 - who eventually authored 52 romance novels and novelettes, many of which were serialized and syndicated in newspapers around the country; Henry Warder, who died as an infant in 1892; Kathleen L., born 1893; and Madge Anna, born May 1895.

Anna died in 1931 and Henry was remarried for a short time (just over a year, to Phoebe Amanda Thomas, before his own death on Sept. 30, 1934. Per records, he died in Boulder, Colorado where he was being treated for illness. Both Henry and Anna, along with infant son Henry Warder (whom they called Warder), are buried in the Tarkio Home Cemetery, Tarkio, Atchison County, Missouri.

My thanks and appreciation to Jeffrey C for originally creating the pages for Henry and Anna and photographing their monuments and markers.

See wife Anna's memorial site for additional pictures of the Henry Hurst home in Tarkio, MO and the Hurst daughters.
