Joy Kelley Dies Of Heart Attack

Joy Kelley, 62, retired oil company distributor passed away at Mojave Medical Center Sunday, Jan 25 at 5:30 p.m. despite heroic measures performed by two local doctors and Kern County Fire Department resuscitator crews at his L Street residence on Friday.
Joy was stricken with a heart attack shortly after finishing his noon day meal. Mrs. Kelley telephoned the hospital and Fire Dept.
The first doctor to arrive on the scene found Mr. Kelley’s heart feebly beating and in a few seconds it had stopped.
The doctor immediately made an incision and began massaging the heart. The resuscitator crew also arrived and set up the equipment to administer oxygen. Mrs. Evelyn Ball, a daughter who is a nurse, also assisted the doctor who was later joined by another doctor and both took turns keeping the heart functioning until the man could be moved.
The heart finally began beating by itself and Mr. Kelley was taken to the hospital by Mojave Ambulance Service. Mojave Fire Dept. crews continued to operate the resuscitator until the man seemed out of danger.
Joy Kelley was born in Lompoc, California in 1896. He came to Mojave with his family 23 years ago and resided at 15870 L St.
For 38 years he was an employee of Standard Oil Company and 11 years of that time he was their distributor in Mojave.
He served his country during World War I in the U.S. Marine Corp. Joy was a member of the Masons, American Legion and Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, Edith L. Kelley, his daughter, Evelyn Ball of Boron, his son, Allen Kelley of Mojave, one grand daughter and three grand sons; two brothers, Lloyd of Lancaster and Neil of Visalia; three sisters, Mrs. Tena Porter of Lancaster, Mrs. Harold Sturr of Millville, Calif. and Mrs. Minnie Juhnke of Lancaster.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 28 at 2:00 p.m. in the Community Congregational Church with Rev. Ralph Coe officiating.
