Major League Baseball Player. For seven seasons (1948 to 1954), he played at the shortstop, second base and third base positions with the Detroit Tigers, St. Louis Browns, Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles. Born Cornelius John Barry, he made his initial mark on the baseball diamond while at Central High School in Michigan. Following service with the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, Berry enrolled at Western State Teachers College (now Western State University) where he played collegiate baseball. Signed by Detroit as an amateur free agent in 1942, he made his Major League debut on April 20, 1948. The following season (1949), he earned the starting second baseman position and produced a career-high 78 hits. After retiring as a player, he served as a Minor League manager with the Detroit Tigers' organization. He later worked as a carpenter and served in his hometown, political arena.
