Death: Sep. 27, 1864

John Bullis was born in Wilkes County, NC, about 1830. He was the son of John B. Bullis and Mary Polly Bumgarner Bullis. John was a laborer on his father's farm before he enlisted in the 26th NC Regiment, Company C, on September 21, 1862, for 3 years or the war. John's brother Simeon and cousin Ben Bullis had joined the 26th NC Regiment in June 1861. Their brother Wesley would join the same regiment in early 1863. John was listed as present with the 26th NC Regiment until he was captured by the Union Army at the Battle of Bristow Station on October 14, 1863. The next day he was committed to the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, D.C. Two weeks later he was transferred to Point Lookout Prison Camp in Southern Maryland. On September 18, 1864, John Bullis was exchanged at Aiken's Landing and sent to Camp Winder Hospital in Richmond. He died on September 27, 1864 from chronic diarrhea and was buried at Hollywood Cemetery, Soldiers Section V, Lot 445. Like many of their neighbors and relatives, none of the 4 Bullis men survived the war to return home to Wilkes County.
