Virginia Hartzell Book, 81, of Corsicana passed away Thursday, May 3, 2001 at Heritage Oaks West.

Mrs. Book was born Sept. 16, 1919 to William and Jennie Hartzell.

She was a chief in the U.S. Navy for many years. C.D.T. U.S. Navy Virginia Hartzell Book, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William B. Hartzell. Served as the first Dental Assistant on the Post at Camp Hood, in Sept 1942. Also first woman in Navy Leadership School and first woman instructor in Dental Prosthetics Technician School. Navy Training Center, San Diego, Calif

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mac Book; sister, Billie Welch McCracken; and parents.

Mrs. Book is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Danny Michael and Joan Book of Escondido, Calif.; daughter, Barbara McCall of West Des Moines, Iowa; brother and sister-in-law, Ben and Ponnie Hartzell of Oklahoma; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, nieces and nephews and several cousins.

Just found this notice today. I was stationed with Tex in Hawaii and DT School. Knew her husband CWO Book also before they were married in San Diego. May they rest I peace. DTCM Ira W. Briggs USN (Ret)
