He was a hat and cap manufacturer in Airdrie and Glasgow, Scotland taking over the business from his father, James Knox.
He served as Elder and treasurer in the Broomknoll Church, as his father before him. For a number of years he served as Superintendant of the Sabbath School of Broomknoll Church. He was one of the founders of the Airdrie Town Mission and for many years it's Treasurer. He took a prominent part in acquiring the present Mission Building in 1872.
He was treasurer of the Airdrie Savings Bank for thirteen years, and did much to popularize the Bank and bring its advantages before the public. Walter was an attractive and fluent speaker, a great admirer of Burns and an expert accountant.
His favorite instrument was the flute and he was an accomplished musician. His favorite hobby was angling.
On December 13, 1865, he married Jane (Jean) Gentleman Russell, the daughter of Matthew Russell and Elizabeth Gentleman in Cross, Airdrie, Scotland.
On Saturday, December 28, 1878, Walter Knox, died at his residence, Myrtle Bank, Airdrie, in the 45th year of his age. Died from ulceration of bowel. Mr. Knox was a prominent townsman of Aidrie, and had identified himself with all of the social economics of the district. He took an active interest in all that tended to the welfare of the town, and was for many years treasurer of The Airdrie Saving Bank, which had very much prospered under his superintendence. His sudden departure will be long remembered in Airdrie.
Walter was originally buried in the Old Broomknoll Churchyard but was moved to New Monkland when the new church was built.

In Memory of James Knox A Man of the People who died 10th November 1866, 62 years *tombstone is weathered and difficult to read. His grand daughter Jeannie Knox died January 1868, Isabella Williamson, his wife died 25th September 1874. His grand daughter Robina Knox died 19th April 1787. His son, Walter Knox.
