DAISY BERTHA STEMM NORTON
or
BERTHA "DAISY" STEMM NORTON
Age 95 years

Widow of the late Adelbert Freely "Bert" Norton.

Mother of Mildred L. Norton Clunk and author Andre Alice Norton (born Alice Mary Norton).

Daughter of Henrietta/Harriett "Hettie" Harris and Peter Stemm.

Sister of Carrie Stemm and Alice M. Stemm.

Her wonderful son-in-law, Joseph Francis Clunk, became totally blind suddenly in 1918. He married, fathered four children, and worked in the United States and Canada to teach blind people factory work during the war effort, worked for the United States Government, was an active leader and speaker for the association of the blind, worked tirelessly helping the blind to learn a trade and be productive, as well as built furniture, and graduated from law school.

Daisy lived in Shelby, Ohio, before their move to Cleveland, Ohio, where she lived for nearly 70 years before moving to Maitland, Florida, with daughter, Andre, where she died. Daughter Mildred resided in the Baltimore, Maryland-Washington, D.C. area most of her adult life.

Daisy and Bert's daughters were widely spaced in age, Mildred was born in August 1895, and Andre was born in February 1912.

Old records give her name as "Daisy B." and her obituary lists her as Daisy Stemm Norton, but various biographies of her daughter, writer Andre Norton, give her birth name as "Bertha". Daisy was probably a nickname that she used all her life instead of her given birth name.

Census records gave her birthplace as Maryland but her obituary stated she was born in Mansfield, Ohio. Her sister, Alice, was also born in Maryland and the family was living in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland in 1870, just after the birth of her sister Alice and before the birth of Daisy. It's likely she grew up in the Mansfield area but born in Maryland and her daughters mistakenly believed she was born in Mansfield because of strong family ties to the area.

Her parents were both Ohio natives, as was her oldest sister, Carrie.
