US Army – WWI; He enlisted as an infantryman; he transferred to the 315th Cavalry Regiment which was sent to Camp Knox, Kentucky, and reassigned to an Artillery unit (Battery D, 72nd Field Artillery). While stationed at Schofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawai'i with Battery D, 13th Field Artillery, he achieved the rank of Sergeant.
